Direct observation of real users is invaluable during user research and evaluation. This can be done in controlled situations such as a usability lab, as this enables more detailed instrumentation and recording, but is often best in the user's own environment (in the wild). Direct observation may involve simply watching and keeping notes, or use video or other recording techniques, with or without the user researcher being present. Of course, direct observation, especially video recording, requires clear and explicit permissions from those observed, especially if there are power dynamics (e.g. employer– worker) that might create implicit pressure.
